Mercat de les flors

The history of the Mercat de les Flors as a municipal theatre goes back to 1983, when the councillor then responsible for culture, Maria Aurèlia Capmany, and the then Mayor of Barcelona, Pasqual Maragall, encouraged the creation of this stage in the city, occupying the Noucentista building of the Palau de l'Agricultura, built at the time of the 1929 International Exhibition on the hill of Montjuïc.

The great dome measuring 12 metres in diameter which presides over the Mercat's lobby is the work of the Majorcan artist Miquel Barceló.

The Mercat de les Flors forms part of the facilities making up the City of Theatre, where the Plaça Margarita Xirgu communicates three theatrical spaces: the Mercat, the Teatre Lliure and the Theatre Institute.
