During the Civil War
During the Civil War years, the Village gradually lost its celebratory purpose and no longer received enthusiastic and curious visitors. The patina of idyllic reality surrounding it was swept away by the reality of war, which turned the site into another theatre of the conflagration. In what is probably the least known period in its history, the site was turned into an internment camp for prisoners.
In these tragic war years, it became a muse for two film-makers: Max Aub and André Malraux were making the film Sierra de Teruel (L’Espoir), dealing with the Spanish Civil War. They made great use of the site, where they filmed several town and village scenes.
