ASTURIAS
In El Poble Espanyol there is one building that exemplifies the architecture of Asturias, an autonomous community on the Cantabrian Sea with a maritime climate characterised by plenty of rain which fosters an exuberant green landscape.
The name Asturias comes from the Asturs, the first people who lived in this region before Romanisation. Asturias has a rich artistic legacy, with its native Pre-Romanesque architecture being the outstanding feature. Romanesque art is also very important, as the Santiago de Compostela pilgrimage routes cross the region.
Neoclassicism gave rise to many casonas (mansions) which can be seen in the towns and cities.
