Palacio de los Golfines de Abajo

Palacio de los Golfines de Abajo / Cáceres / Extremadura

Cáceres

The house of the Golfines de Abajo is a real symbol of Plateresque, a style distinguished by the profusion of decoration. The upper part of the doorway is richly decorated with symbols to protect the inhabitants of the house. The medallions, with representations of the owners of the house or mythological beings, are inspired by classical tradition. The coats of arms represent the kingdom of Leon and the Golfines (a fleur-de-lis and a castle, symbol of the kingdom of Castile).

The legend says that Queen Isabel the Catholic stayed the night here when she visited Cáceres intending to end the differences and confrontations this family was having for political reasons with the owners of the house of the Golfines de Arriba. As a security measure, the Queen ordered the demolition of all towers in the city. This house belonged to the guards of her husband, King Ferdinand.
