The Poble Espanyol is one of the great touristic attractions of the city. Since 1929, year in which it was inaugurated this architectural treasure in the context of Barcelona National Exposition. Since its origins, the enclosure was designed with the objective of representing the essence of life in the Spanish towns. Today, it remains this mission with a brought up to date and revised content, since the technology is more and more important. This is the only place in Barcelona where you can enter the Spanish culture essence in a few hours: architecture, craft, art, traditions… Surf in this website and discover all that we have for you!
Architecture, art and traditions in Poble Espanyol
The Barcelona Poble Espanyol is, first and foremost, a town to immerse in its architecture, art and Spanish traditions. The modernist architect Puig i Cadafalch and his followers, the architects Ramon Reventós and Francesc Folguera and the artists Xavier Nogués and Miquel Utrillo, wanted to recreate in Montjuïc the ‘ideal Spanish town’. And for this, they took a road trip through 1.600 populations of the entire country. This way they succeeded in representing the traditional architecture essence: the typical Andalusian town, the narrow streets, the central square, the city hall and a Catalan roman monastery included. The result is the one that you admire today in our enclosure.
The Poble Espanyol visit is organized in four great geographical areas that do not respect a political but a cultural division of the territory:
● The Mediterranean
● The north
● The centre
● The south
Walk quietly the enclosure significates walk these areas not only contemplating buildings. It is much more than this. In each zone, you will find an immersive audio-visual space with which you will enter the traditions, the gastronomy and the landscapes of the zone in which you are. Feeling Spain! is the name of these facilities that put the technology at the visitor’s service for him to get a close look of the “different Spains” culture essence.
Another element that clearly identifies the Barcelona Poble Espanyol is art. In one of its building you can find the Museo Fran Daurel, which hosts works of art of leading figures of the contemporary Spanish art. Do not lose this treasure –which access is included with the enclosure entrance- in which you can admire pieces of Picasso, Dalí, Miró, among others. Between the more than 300 works of art that included this precious collection are also the 37 large-format sculptures of the sculptural Garden.
The Poble Espanyol of Barcelona is also a unique craft centre. It is the only place in Barcelona where you can see more than 20 artisans elaborating unique leather, glass, jewellery pieces and Spanish guitars included, every day, with their own hands. Do not lose the shows of the traditional occupations in a quiet environment.
The Poble Espanyol and its unique environment
One of the greatest virtues of the enclosure is its privileged situation: the Montjuïc Mountain, at a few meters from the famous Magic Fountains. Well connected with the city centre and at 5 minutes walking from the metro and the Plaza España FGC, the Barcelona Poble Espanyol is elevated enough to offer a majestic panoramic view over the city. Especially if you get closer to the viewpoint of our roman monastery, you can admire this wonderful landscape.
Three urban buses lines, the Teleférico de Montjuïc, two touristic buses, the taxi and the private car are other totally valid options to reach the Poble Espanyol.
Visit this website and organize an unforgettable day, whether if you are travelling alone or in couple, with friends or family. And do not forget that if you buy your entrances online… you will get an interesting discount!
